Jesus Winked
This weekend we celebrate Easter…the event that changed everything! Jesus is risen indeed! May your hearts and lives be full of hope and power because of that truth, today! And I hope you enjoy this poem I wrote on Easter morning, 2022.
I’m pretty sure He winked that day,
When he finally spoke from the cross.
“It is finished”, was his cry…
His team thought all was lost!
The devil likely laughed out loud.
I bet he thought he’d won.
But then a signal from the cross.
A secret message from God’s Son.
It was hard to see for most, I’d bet.
it was utterly distinct.
But when I look with my mind’s eye,
I think Jesus winked.
He winked as if to say to all
“It’s finished, sure, but is it?”
He winked to say, “I’m in a fight,
But don’t think I can’t win it!”
He winked ‘cause courage flowed from Him
In equal measure to His blood
He winked ‘cause love and forgiveness
Poured out just like a flood.
He winked to acknowledge “this is pretty bad…
…hurts worse than you can believe
And though I’m battered pretty good,
I’ve still got some tricks up my sleeve.”
He winked to say, “don’t worry friends
The day’s dark; the storm clouds black.
He winked to say, “I’m going now,
but don’t fear - I’ll be right back!”
He said that he would reign forever
But they didn’t understand
He told them he would resurrect
But they said, “you’re just a man.”
He said three days would pass and then
the victory’d be sealed
And through the pain and stripes He bore
Their sickness would be healed
And He did more than say it too
No matter how great the odds
He did it, left behind the cross,
There is no greater god!
On Easter Sunday a stone was rolled —
A tomb was found wide open.
He took death’s clothes and folded them.
He took deaths chains and broke them.
He rose and overcame the grave
He beat the devil severely;
He stepped out, heaven’s champion,
The world was changed so clearly.
And when His friends finally recognized
Their risen Savior, teacher, friend…
They asked Him about what they thought they’d seen,
And Jesus turned and winked again!
